ARTErra rural art residency

What Artists say about us
O que os artistas dizem sobre nós

 Lyn Dallison - New Zealand
(Sculptor)

The artist residency, Arterra, is a rural residency in the small Portuguese village Lobao da Beira. the residency is located on the edge of the village, and a short walk passed beautiful farm gardens has you in the rural foothills.
The studio spaces are in a working garden so it is a peaceful, reflective place.
The residents are very well supported with comfortable accommodation and a great administration team ready to help with any needs.
There is a nearby town, Tondela, with a comprehensive weekly market, a good range of shops, a cultural institute, and a very good museum.
Every effort is made at Arterra to support your artistic endeavours, and it is an inspiring place.

"Arterra is a peaceful retreat away from the ceaselessness of urban life. It was a chance to let my thinking find form in the expansive hills, vineyards, and back country paths along the river; an ideal setting for contemplation and focus. The rustic village stands set apart from the world, old stone walls and buildings seemed left over from a different time. I had a wonderful month there and greatly appreciated the energy of everyone involved. It was a perfect place to develop my work and a wonderful introduction to Portugal.
I'm hoping to be back again soon to continue where I left off.

Had a great time at ARTErra! Lovely rural location but also easy to travel to nearby towns and villages. I cycled around a lot and the ecopista is worth checking out. Micaela and staff are very friendly and couldn't be more helpful. We spent a great day exploring caramulo. Will be back in the future.

I had the pleasure and privilege of spending 4 weeks at ARTErra in the late winter and early spring of 2015. It was, truly, a transformational creative experience. The work spaces are filled with light and the quiet of the Portuguese countryside and are conducive to the deepest kind of creative work. Most days, I walked the hills nearby where I could contemplate and write as needed/desired and was filled up by the verdant beauty, history, and peace that surrounded me.

Micaela was the perfect hostess - always present when needed, but never hovering. Her expertise in media and audio-work, not to mention her encyclopedic knowledge of the area made my stay that much more exciting. She was always available with a cup of tea to discuss work, life, and everything under the sun- and I'm honored to now call her my friend.

As for my work, what began as an idea was turned into a draft, which is now nearing completion. I can honestly say it wouldn't have happened without the peace, solitude, and beauty that ARTErra offers. Micaela has created a truly magnificent retreat for artists. A life changing place to work!
